Wedding Bucharest – Ingrid & Hal
A Wedding with Enough Energy to Last All Summer
There are weddings you photograph, and then there are weddings you truly live through — intensely, joyfully, completely. As a wedding photographer in Bucharest, I have photographed many beautiful celebrations, but Ingrid and Hal’s wedding was definitely something else. One of the most dynamic and vibrant weddings I have ever photographed, with so much happening throughout the day that my camera barely had time to rest.
I clicked with Ingrid and Hal from the very first few minutes. They are young, beautiful, energetic and incredibly open, with that kind of natural warmth that makes you quickly forget you had only just met. Their friends were just as lively and full of humour, and the atmosphere came together almost instantly.
For me, the fact that Hal is a Turkish Cypriot was also a little personal reason to be happy. I absolutely love Turkey. I have visited several times and, of all the places I have been, it is probably the one I find myself returning to most often in my thoughts. Istanbul, southern Turkey, the sea, the smell of food drifting through the streets, the people who know how to sit down, talk for hours and simply enjoy the moment. I already have many friends there, and every time I return to Turkey, I feel as though I am coming back to a familiar place. So when I found out the groom was Turkish Cypriot, I had a good feeling about this wedding. And it turns out I was right. I even had the chance to practise a little of the Turkish I still remember, right from the preparations.
From Champagne to the Swimming Pool
I had barely arrived at Hal’s preparations when his friends came up with their first mischievous idea: throw him into the swimming pool 🙂
I’m not sure Hal was completely prepared for it, but his friends certainly were. It was one of those spontaneous moments I love about wedding photography: nothing was staged, nobody had to play a part, and I simply happened to be there with my camera in hand.
Meanwhile, Ingrid was going through her own preparations with her mother and bridesmaids. Champagne, laughter, emotion and that beautiful kind of nervous excitement that comes before a day you have been looking forward to for so long.
And then came one of the funniest moments of the day.
First Look… or Rather, First Prank
Hal was supposed to see his bride for the first time. Except his best friend Erkan had other plans.
He wrapped himself in a bedsheet, put on an improvised veil and, for a few moments, transformed himself into the bride. When Hal turned around and saw a dark-haired, bearded and well-built man dressed in white standing in front of him, the look on his face was absolutely priceless.
Everyone burst out laughing. So did I, of course, but I made sure not to put my camera down.
Then, after the prank, came the real first look. Ingrid appeared in front of Hal, and all the laughter and craziness of the previous moments suddenly gave way to emotion. There were tears, smiles and that particular look two people share when they see each other for the first time on the day they are about to join their lives together.
A few Cypriot traditions followed, along with confetti, group photographs, and then we headed towards the centre of Bucharest.
A Walk Through Bucharest, With No Rush
The photo session with Ingrid and Hal was one of those walks where the camera almost disappears.
We wandered through central Bucharest, talked, laughed and simply let things happen naturally.
I didn’t want to build perfect images. I wanted to photograph them as they really were that day. In love, emotional, happy and, most of all, together.
I think that is what I love most about photojournalistic wedding photography: the city becomes the backdrop, but the story remains about the people. And with Ingrid and Hal, the story was incredibly easy to photograph. All I had to do was watch them for a few minutes.
Reina Events – And This Is Where the Madness Begins
If the day had already been intense, the reception at Reina Events took everything up several notches.
It began with a percussion show, during which Ingrid and Hal did not simply stand back and watch. They jumped straight into the atmosphere, joining the musicians, and from there everything moved in one direction: more and more energy.
There were traditional Cypriot dances, shots, laughter, and a dance floor that never seemed to empty! As the night went on, the elegant outfits from the beginning of the evening were gradually abandoned, and the party turned into something that completely broke away from the usual rules of Romanian weddings. Shirts came undone, ties started flying through the air, and at one point I found myself photographing people dancing bare-chested to the rhythm of the darbuka, as if we were at a festival rather than a wedding. 🙂
And that is exactly what I loved so much about it.
Nobody cared anymore about how they looked. Nobody was trying to be elegant, pose nicely for the photographer or follow some unwritten rule. They were simply enjoying themselves — genuinely and completely!
And I kept photographing.
And photographing.
And photographing some more.
Until the following morning.
A Wedding I Would Photograph All Over Again
I think sometimes you only realise how special a wedding was after it is over. When you get home, look at your camera and realise just how much you photographed — not because you wanted to collect frames, but simply because something meaningful and unexpected was always happening.
That was Ingrid and Hal’s wedding.
A young, wild, joyful and incredibly vibrant Romanian-Cypriot wedding. A day when I laughed and took photos at the same time, and by the end I had the feeling the party could have gone on for another day.
Two Wild Hearts, One Wedding
Thank you, Ingrid and Hal, for welcoming me so naturally into your world and for making me feel, from the very first hours, more like a friend than a photographer.
It was one of those events that remind you why you love being a wedding photographer.
I wish every wedding could be a little more like this one.
